From Madrid to Harvard: My CyberMath Academy Experience

By Sofia R., High School Student, Madrid, Spain Hi! I’m Sofia, a 16-year-old high school student from Madrid, and this past summer, I experienced something truly unforgettable: I attended the CyberMath Academy Summer Math Camp at Harvard University, from July 7 to 18, 2025. It wasn’t just about math—it was about discovering a global community, walking in the footsteps of brilliant minds, and realizing that dreams do come true, no matter where you’re from. Discovering CyberMath Academy It all started on a rainy December afternoon. I was browsing through YouTube, looking for challenging math problems, when I stumbled upon a video about CyberMath Academy’s Summer Math Camp held at Harvard University. The words “Harvard,” “advanced math,” and “international students” instantly caught my attention. I clicked through to cybermath.org, and within minutes, I was deep into reading about the camp’s curriculum, AI seminars, and the chance to live and study in one of the most iconic universities in the world. Something clicked in me—I knew I had to apply.
From Madrid to Harvard: My CyberMath Academy Experience📝 Applying from Spain: A Simple Start to a Big Journey Applying was easier than I imagined. I filled out the application online and wrote a short essay explaining my love for mathematics—how I see numbers as the poetry of the universe. My parents were a bit hesitant at first (I mean, it’s a big leap from Madrid to Boston), but the early-bird rate of $860 (before April 1, 2025) and the transparent information on the website helped reassure them. When I got my acceptance letter a few weeks later, I screamed with joy—my Harvard dream was beginning! ✈️ Arriving in Boston: A Spanish Girl’s First Glimpse of Harvard Flying into Boston was surreal. As the plane descended, I saw a city full of charm, with a beautiful blend of colonial history and modern innovation. The CyberMath Academy team welcomed me at the airport with a friendly smile and a shuttle straight to Harvard Yard. Seeing the red-brick buildings, the Harvard banners waving in the wind, and meeting other campers from Japan, Turkey, the U.S., and India—it was a moment I’ll never forget. I stayed in a cozy dorm on campus—shared with a girl from South Korea who became one of my closest friends. Our room overlooked a courtyard filled with green grass and laughter from other students. It didn’t take long to feel at home. 🍽️ Living the Harvard Life: From Pancakes to Problem Sets We had breakfast at the stunning Harvard Faculty Club, where I tried American pancakes, cereal, and—luckily—found strong coffee (a must for any Spanish student!). Meals were moments of connection. I learned how to say “hello” in Korean, practiced my English every day, and even shared some Spanish phrases with others. 📚 A Day in the Life at Camp Every day was the perfect mix of learning and living.
  • Morning (9:00 AM–12:00 PM): Advanced math classes, covering topics like number theory, logic, and algebraic puzzles.
  • Afternoon (1:00 PM–5:00 PM): Engaging seminars in AI and medicine, plus city adventures like visiting MIT and walking the Freedom Trail.
  • Evening (7:00 PM–10:00 PM): Group challenges, coding games, or simply sitting in Harvard Square talking about our dreams under the stars.
💡 Math Classes: Discovering My Inner Mathematician The math courses were thrilling. We solved problems inspired by Olympiads and real-world scenarios. One day we explored combinatorics, and I remember jumping out of my seat when I cracked a particularly hard problem. Our instructors were top-notch—some were PhDs, others were competitive mathematicians—and they explained even the most complex ideas with clarity and passion. 🧠 Seminars That Opened My Eyes The AI seminar blew my mind. I had no idea how deeply math is connected to machine learning and how even simple equations can power predictive algorithms. In another seminar, we learned how math models are used to track heart rhythms and detect diseases. I was fascinated! I’ve always loved numbers, but this camp showed me that math is a superpower that touches every part of life—from health to tech. 🏛️ Harvard’s Magic: More Than Just a Campus Harvard felt like a living storybook. Sitting on the steps of Widener Library, solving math problems under the trees in Harvard Yard, and watching students rush to class made me feel like I belonged there. One afternoon, our group joked about returning to Harvard one day—as students. And for the first time, I really believed I could. 🎒 What I Took Back to Madrid Saying goodbye was tough. But I returned home with so much more than memories:
  • New math skills and problem-solving strategies
  • A deep passion for AI and coding (I’ve already started a Python project!)
  • Friends from five continents
  • A renewed sense of confidence and global connection
